Observing the Ordinary
Shifting the way we see and observe the objects around us brings more beauty into focus. It turns a mindset of scarcity—“I have nothing to design with”—into one of abundance: “There are too many options.”
One of the best compliments I ever received as an event designer was, “I never knew a rock and an apricot could be so beautiful.” I guess “ordinary” objects have always inspired me.
Nature’s Readymades
The artist Marcel Duchamp redefined the role of the artist by taking mass-produced, utilitarian objects and designating them as art. He called them “Readymades” and argued, “An ordinary object [could be] elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist.”

Stones, feathers, bones, and artichokes are all ‘readymade’ sculptures. Each has its own graceful proportions, rich textures, and natural color palette, making them perfect Still Life ingredients. These objects only need to be arranged and presented with intention to be seen for what they are—works of art.
Discover the Unseen
When we adjust our focus to discover the unseen, we exponentially increase the beauty we experience.
